How much does a Murphy bed cost? Alpha Closets & Murphy Beds Inc says a Murphy bed typically runs $4K to $17K, as of October 2026. National cost guides land lower, at $2,000 to $4,000 with an average near $3,000. Bed size, the cabinet around it and what you build beside it explain most of the gap.
This guide shows both sets of numbers side by side, what moves the price, and what a written quote should spell out.
Typical Murphy bed prices
A Murphy bed (also called a wall bed) folds up into a cabinet or wall when you aren’t using it. The name started as a brand. Here is what Alpha and three public sources say.
| Source | Range | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Alpha (October 2026) | $4K to $17K | Alpha’s typical range for a Murphy bed |
| Fixr (2025) | $2,000 to $4,000, average $3,000 | National average homeowner spend |
| HomeAdvisor (2026) | $2,000 to $4,000, average $3,000 | Installed, by size, materials and design complexity |
| Lori Beds (2026) | $400 to over $6,000 | Range across models; Lori Beds is a bed maker |
Alpha’s figure is a typical range, not a quote. The others are national figures from third-party sites and are not Alpha’s pricing. Lori Beds sells its own beds, so read its range with that in mind.
Why Alpha’s range sits above the national average
Alpha’s range starts above the national average of about $3,000. Look at what the guides say about custom beds and the two sets of numbers overlap.
Fixr says “you will spend between $1,500 and $15,000 on a Murphy bed,” depending on how it is made. HomeAdvisor says custom builds run $3,500 to $15,000 or more. Lori Beds says “a custom Murphy bed can cost $5,000 to $15,000 or more.”
So a national average blends simple prefabricated beds with custom ones. A custom bed is designed for your wall, built in a cabinet shop and installed, and it often has storage beside it. Alpha builds its Murphy beds in its own Gulf Breeze cabinet shop, in melamine or in stained or painted hardwood and hardwood plywood, with an on-site finishing shop.
Cabinetry alone accounts for a lot. Fixr says the cabinetry of a Murphy bed “costs between $1,000 and $4,000, depending on the material.” A bed with a desk and two side units has far more cabinet to build than a bed alone. Alpha’s Patrick Murphy Bed is one example: a Murphy bed with a fold-down desk and side units for extra storage.
Murphy bed cost by size
Size changes the price. HomeAdvisor gives these national install prices:
| Bed size | National install price (HomeAdvisor, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Twin | $1,500 to $2,200 |
| Full | $1,500 to $3,000 |
| Queen | $1,500 to $4,000 |
| King | $2,500 to $6,000 |
King has the widest spread, and the guide doesn’t say why. These are national install prices. They don’t show what a custom bed costs at any one size.
What moves the price most, in order
- Cabinet material and finish. Melamine costs less. Stained or painted hardwood costs more.
- What is built around the bed. Side units, a fold-down desk, drawers and a countertop each add cabinet.
- Bed size. Queen and king need a bigger cabinet and a stronger frame than a twin.
- Mechanism. A pivot mechanism with springs or pistons lifts and holds the bed. Alpha uses original “Murphy Bed” mechanisms. Ask any seller which one is in the quote.
- Installation. HomeAdvisor says flat installer fees run $300 to $800. Lori Beds says professional installation “typically costs $300 to $1,200,” depending on the model and wall type.
The order above is our judgment, not a published ranking.

Kit or custom: what you pay for
A kit prices parts. A custom bed prices design, build and installation.
A kit puts a lower number on the sticker, but there are two trade-offs. The first, from Alpha: with DIY kits the risk is missing parts, and the beds are very heavy.
The second is safety. In August 2026 the US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of about 1,250 Merax Murphy beds, sold online for between $900 and $1,100 from May 2024 through February 2026.
The commission said “the frame of the wall bed can fall onto consumers, posing deadly impact, crush and laceration hazards.” It told owners to stop using the beds and contact the company for a free repair kit.
That is one recall, and it doesn’t mean every low-priced bed is unsafe. It does show that a bed is only as safe as its frame and how it is mounted. If you buy a kit, follow the instructions exactly and ask yourself who will carry it, lift it and fasten it to the wall. If that sounds like a lot, a professional install is worth pricing.
What a Murphy bed quote should include
Two quotes only compare if they list the same things. Ask each shop to write down:
- Bed size and mattress depth. Alpha’s standard is a mattress 11 inches deep or less. A thicker mattress may not fit the cabinet.
- Mechanism. The type, and who services it later.
- Cabinet material and finish. Melamine, stained wood or painted, and which parts.
- Side units, desk and countertop. What is included, with sizes.
- Installation. Who installs, whether they are employees or subcontractors, and how the bed is fastened to the wall. Alpha’s installers are company employees.
- What is not included. The mattress, delivery, paint touch-up or removal of anything in the way.
- Deposit and timing. How much, and when the clock starts.

For how Alpha builds them, see the Murphy beds page.
Timeline and what happens next
Alpha’s lead time is typically 4 to 8 weeks from deposit to installation, as of October 2026. Some projects take longer. Plan the guest-room date around that, not around the day you start comparing prices.
